Osaka deserves one or two nights at the start or end of a trip: it is the big city closest to Kansai Airport, 40 minutes away by train, and only 30 minutes from Kyoto. Travellers come for the food, from Kuromon Market to the counters of Dotonbori, for Toyotomi Hideyoshi's castle and its buried walls, and for a city that stays up late, with an observatory open until 10.30 pm. It is also a base for Nara, 34 minutes away by Kintetsu express. Couples, families and travellers at the end of their stay will find two addresses from Umika's selection here, one in the north and one facing the castle.

## Two centres: Kita and Minami

Osaka has two centres, and the choice of hotel decides which one is on your doorstep in the evening.

- **Kita**, the north, grows around Osaka Station and Umeda: office towers, department stores, the Umeda Sky Building and, further south, Nakanoshima island and its museums. JR trains to Kyoto leave from Osaka Station.
- **Minami**, the south, takes in Namba, Dotonbori and Kuromon Market. Nankai trains to Kansai Airport and Kintetsu expresses to Nara leave from Namba.

The castle lies to the east, between the two, in a large park.

## Osaka Castle and its buried walls

Toyotomi Hideyoshi began the castle in 1583 on the site of Ishiyama Hongan-ji temple. His keep burned down in 1615; the next one was destroyed by lightning in 1665. The present keep was rebuilt in 1931 with donations from the city's residents and renovated from 1995 to 1997. It houses a museum, open from 9 am to 6 pm, last entry 30 minutes before closing, and closed from 28 December to 1 January. Admission is 1,200 ¥ (about 7 €).

The same ticket opens the underground Toyotomi Stone Wall Museum. When the Tokugawa, the family of Edo-period shoguns, rebuilt the castle, they buried the Toyotomi-era stone walls; excavations in 1984 found them again. Visitors go underground to see the wall that guarded the heart of the castle, still marked by the fire of the Summer Siege of Osaka. It keeps the same hours as the keep, with last entry at 5.30 pm.

## Minami: Dotonbori, the canal and Kuromon

Dotonbori takes its name from Yasui Doton, who paid to have the canal dug from 1612. The district was once the quarter of theatres and kabuki (classical Japanese theatre); today it is the place for food and entertainment, with giant 3D signs above the crowds. The Shochikuza theatre stands near Ebisubashi bridge, and the Tombori River Walk runs along the water.

To see the district from the canal, the guided Tombori River Cruise leaves Tazaemonbashi pier every half hour from 11 am to 9 pm. It lasts about 20 minutes and costs 2,000 ¥ (about 12 €) per adult.

A few minutes' walk away, Kuromon Market is a 580 m covered arcade with about 150 shops. It began in the late Edo period, when fish merchants set up near Enmyo-ji temple, and became an officially recognised market in 1902.

## Sumiyoshi Taisha, the shrine of the south

In the south of the city, Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine was founded, according to tradition, in 211. Its four main sanctuaries, rebuilt in 1810, are all National Treasures. The way in crosses the Sorihashi, an arched bridge about 21 m long and 5 m high, with a slope of more than 40° at its steepest. In January, about two million people make their first shrine visit of the year here: another month is better for seeing it quietly.

## Kita: Umeda and Nakanoshima

The Umeda Sky Building joins its two towers with the Kuchu Teien Observatory, on the 39th and 40th floors and the rooftop. It opens from 9.30 am to 10.30 pm, last entry 10 pm, for 2,000 ¥ (about 12 €). The open-air roof looks out over the whole city, by day or by night.

On Nakanoshima island, the Nakanoshima Museum of Art belongs to the City of Osaka. Architect Katsuhiko Endo, chosen by competition, built it around a five-storey central passage lit from above. The galleries open from 10 am to 5 pm; the museum closes on Mondays, or on the following weekday when Monday is a public holiday.

## Osaka, the gateway to Kansai

## What is the weather like in Osaka?

## Where to stay in Osaka

Umika's selection includes two hotels opened in 2024 and 2025, one in each half of the city.

**[Four Seasons Hotel Osaka](/en/hotels/four-seasons-osaka/)**, in Kita. Opened in August 2024, it occupies floors 28 to 37 of the One Dojima tower, about 10 minutes' walk from Osaka Station. Its 175 rooms and suites include the GENSUI floor, on the 28th: 18 rooms and 3 suites with tatami (rice-straw mats), futons and yukata (light cotton kimono), in the spirit of a ryokan, the traditional Japanese inn. The 16 m pool and Japanese baths are on the 36th floor; on the 37th is Sushi L'Abysse Osaka, Yannick Alleno's restaurant. It suits travellers heading to Kyoto from Osaka Station or wanting the restaurants of Kitashinchi within walking distance.

**[Patina Osaka](/en/hotels/patina-osaka/)**, facing the castle. Opened in May 2025 by Capella Hotel Group, it has 221 rooms and suites of 50 to 233 m² over 20 floors, one minute's walk from the castle park. Its 1,400 m² wellness area has a heated indoor pool; its restaurants range from Barin's teppanyaki to IÑAKI's Basque grill. Most rooms sleep up to five, three adults and two children, which makes it the family choice.

Both hotels hold a Michelin Key. The [Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto and Osaka in 12 days](/en/ideas/tokyo-hakone-kyoto-osaka-12-days/) itinerary ends with two nights at Patina Osaka, and the [Nara](/en/japan/nara/) page explains the day trip from Osaka.
