Benesse House is the museum hotel of Naoshima island, on the Seto Inland Sea in Kagawa Prefecture: a contemporary art museum designed by architect Tadao Ando and opened in 1992, with rooms inside the museum itself and in three other buildings by the water, 65 rooms in all. It suits couples or families who come to Naoshima for the art and want to spend two nights there: guests enter the museum free of charge and can visit it until 11 pm.
Winter 2027 closures: the whole hotel is closed from 12 to 18 January 2027; the Beach building and the Terrace restaurant are closed from 4 January to 4 March 2027. On the island, the Chichu Art Museum is closed from 12 January to 19 March 2027.
Sleeping in a museum
Benesse House Museum lies at the heart of Benesse Art Site Naoshima, the museums and outdoor artworks that the Benesse company and the Fukutake Foundation have created across several islands. Hotel guests enter the museum without a ticket, along with the Valley Gallery, and the Hiroshi Sugimoto Gallery: Time Corridors, all open to them until 11 pm. From 1 April 2027 they will also be able to visit the participating Benesse art sites without tickets or reservations. Many rooms have an artwork on the wall.
Four buildings, four kinds of stay
The room table gives sizes and beds; the choice is made first by building.
Museum (10 rooms), inside the museum. You sleep among the artworks and visit alone in the evening. The Museum Twins (27 m²) have a balcony over the sea and the sunset; the Museum Deluxe Twins (34 m², 2nd floor) have the sea in view even from the bathroom and take an extra bed; on the 3rd floor, the Museum Suite and Museum Family Suite (70 m², one of each) sleep four, close to the outdoor works. Children from age 6.
Oval (6 rooms), on the hill, reached by monorail from the museum. This is the most secluded building: four Oval Twins (30 m²), with floor-to-ceiling windows over the sea, and two Oval Suites (70 m²), 403 with a work by Richard Long and 404 with a wall drawing by David Tremlett. The Oval Lounge is open from 7.30 am to 6 pm. Children from age 6. This is the honeymoon choice.
Park (41 rooms), the largest, close to the restaurant, shops, spa and shuttle. Its 39 Park and Park Deluxe rooms (28 m²), twin or king, have a balcony over the sea and the outdoor artworks; two Park Suites (57 m²) add a sofa bed. Park accepts children under 6: it is the building for families with young children.
Beach (8 suites), at the water's edge, 61 m², for three with a sofa bed or for two with a king bed. In the Beach Suite Doubles, a sound work by Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller (2201) or a work by Lee Ufan (2204). Children aged 5 and under are accepted. Building closed from 4 January to 4 March 2027.

- Museum Restaurant Issen: Japanese cuisine, dinner at 6 pm or 8 pm.
- Terrace Restaurant: French cuisine, dinner Friday to Sunday and on public holidays; closed from 4 January to 4 March 2027.
- Setomae Sushi Nagi: sushi, closed on Mondays.

Naoshima and the neighbouring islands
The hotel is in the south of the island; a guest-only shuttle links it with the rest of Naoshima, and a tour desk arranges tailored visits. The Chichu Art Museum, largely underground and another Ando building, shows five of Claude Monet's Water Lilies and works by James Turrell and Walter De Maria; entry is by timed reservation, and an evening programme around Turrell's Open Sky at sunset costs 3,700 ¥ (about 21 €). Teshima, 20 minutes away by boat, has the Teshima Art Museum by Ryūe Nishizawa and Rei Naitō. It is all on our Seto Inland Sea, Naoshima, Teshima and Setoda page, and the Inland Sea and art islands in 10 days itinerary spends two nights at Benesse House.
Getting there
Naoshima is reached from Uno port, 47 to 57 minutes by JR (Japan Railways) train from Okayama, itself about 3 hours 20 from Tokyo, 1 hour from Kyoto and 45 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen (bullet train). From Uno, the ferry takes 20 minutes to Miyanoura port, the fast boat 15 minutes. From Takamatsu, on the island of Shikoku, allow about 50 minutes.
Benesse House, Azumi Setoda or guntû
The three addresses in our Inland Sea selection answer three different wishes. Benesse House is the contemporary art hotel, on Naoshima, with 65 rooms in four buildings. Azumi Setoda occupies an 1876 merchant estate on Ikuchijima island, further west on the Shimanami Kaido island route, with a hinoki bath in every room. guntû is a 17-suite floating ryokan that leaves Onomichi for two or three nights on the water.
